Out of the dozens of figures recorded in tasseography, a small set appears again and again — across Turkish, Greek, Middle Eastern and Western traditions alike. These are the ten you are most likely to meet in your own cup, with their settled meanings. (Our full dictionary covers all 68 symbols with zone-by-zone detail.)
1. Bird 🕊
News and messages. Near the rim: news within days. Large bird: a journey. A bird near the handle: news that concerns you personally.
2. Heart ❤
Affection and connection. A heart at the rim is romance or warmth arriving; at the base, a love that is slow and deep; near the far side, someone else's feelings entering the picture.
3. Road or path 〰
Direction. A long unbroken road: a clear way forward. A fork: a decision. Rising toward the rim: the way becomes clearer soon.
4. Key 🔑
Solutions and openings. The classic "locked door opens" sign — traditionally read as a problem solving itself on a delay you didn't expect.
5. Tree 🌳
Growth with roots: family, health, slow compounding effort. Full and leafy: flourishing. Bare: a season of patience.
6. Fish 🐟
Money in motion, abundance swimming toward the drinker. Several small fish: many small gains rather than one big one.
7. Mountain ⛰
A significant obstacle — and the promise it can be climbed. At the base it is a long arc challenge; near the rim, something to handle this week.
8. Letter ✉
A message with weight: documents, offers, news in writing. Unopened envelope: an offer you haven't yet noticed.
9. Ring
Commitment — the zone decides the contract. At the rim, an engagement or agreement soon; broken or faint, a bond under strain.
10. Star ✦
The wish symbol: a hope already in motion. One of the few figures readers across traditions agree is unconditionally favorable.
How position changes everything
Every symbol above shifts meaning by zone — a serpent at the rim is a small irritation this week; at the base, a long transformation. That is why serious reading guides always pair the symbol with its position. Want to see the full system? Start with the rim zone, or photograph your cup and let the zones be read for you.
